1 Timothy 5:1-8

Do not sharply rebuke an older man, but rather appeal to him as a father, and to the younger men as brothers, to the older women as mothers, and to the younger women as sisters, in all purity.Honor widows who are actually widows; but if any widow has children or grandchildren, they must first learn to show proper respect for their own family and to give back compensation to their parents; for this is acceptable in the sight of God. Now she who is actually a widow and has been left alone has set her hope on God, and she continues in requests and prayers night and day. But she who indulges herself in luxury is dead, even while she lives. 7Give these instructions as well, so that they may be above reproach. But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.”

Do not sharply rebuke…and to the younger: Paul did not want Timothy to be belligerent or manipulative with anyone while he taught the Gospel. He wanted Timothy to simply present the Gospel and appeal in love to both the older and younger men and women.

Actually widows: The church was compiling a list of widows who actually needed financial help and who were not freeloaders or those who had family supporting them. This was Paul and Timothy’s way of reserving charitable funds for those who actually need help. Those who are of the right mind will be worshipping God and trusting in Him for provision. These are the widows that ought to be taken care of in the church.

Does not provide for his own: Those who do not take care of their own widows are not acting like true and authentic believers. As we know Christ in us, we ought to allow Him to live through us in abundance in all contexts and not quench Him.
