CHAPTERS

1 Corinthians 4:1-5

1 “This is the way any person is to regard us: as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. 2 In this case, moreover, it is required of stewards that one be found trustworthy. 3 But to me it is an insignificant matter that I would be examined by you, or by any human court; in fact, I do not even examine myself. 4 For I am not aware of anything against myself; however I am not vindicated by this, but the one who examines me is the Lord. 5 Therefore do not go on passing judgment before the time, but wait until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of human hearts; and then praise will come to each person from God.”

Verse 1: Paul reminds the Corinthians of how they should view him and other church leaders. He encourages them to see them as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God, or the gospel. This highlights the humble role of leaders in the church, who are entrusted with the task of sharing and explaining the truths of the gospel.

Verse 2: Paul emphasizes the importance of faithfulness in carrying out the responsibilities given to them. As stewards of God’s mysteries, church leaders are called to faithfully fulfill their role in sharing and teaching the truths of the gospel. This highlights the need for integrity and reliability in their service.

Verse 3: Paul expresses his indifference towards the judgments of others, including the Corinthians. He does not rely on human evaluations or even his own self-assessment. Instead, he recognizes that the ultimate judgment comes from the Lord. And for all those in Christ, there is no judgment!

Verse 4: Paul acknowledges that having a clear conscience does not automatically make him innocent or free from sin. He understands that it is the Lord who ultimately judges him, and God has judged Paul in Christ. Paul, therefore, is innocent and righteous. This highlights the importance of relying on God’s judgment rather than human opinions or self-righteousness.

Verse 5: Paul advises the Corinthians not to pass judgment prematurely. He encourages them to wait for the Lord’s coming, when everything hidden in darkness will be brought to light and the true motives of the heart will be revealed. Ultimately, it is God who will give praise and reward to each person according to their actions and motives.
