1 Corinthians 8:1-6

¹ “Now concerning food sacrificed to idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge makes one conceited, but love edifies people. ² If anyone thinks that he knows anything, he has not yet known as he ought to know; ³ but if anyone loves God, he is known by Him.⁴ Therefore, concerning the eating of food sacrificed to idols, we know that an idol is nothing at all in the world, and that there is no God but one.⁵ For even if there are so-called gods whether in heaven or on earth, as indeed there are many gods and many lords, ⁶ yet for us there is only one God, the Father, from whom are all things, and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him.”

Verse 1: Paul addresses the issue of food sacrificed to idols. He acknowledges that there may be differing levels of knowledge among believers regarding this matter. However, he cautions against a prideful attitude that can come from knowledge alone. Instead, he emphasizes the importance of love, which edifies and strengthens the body of Christ.

Verse 2: Paul reminds the Corinthians that true knowledge is not merely intellectual understanding, but a deep and comprehensive understanding of God’s truth. He suggests that those who claim to have complete knowledge may still have room to grow in their understanding of God’s ways.

Verse 3: Paul highlights the significance of a genuine love for God. It is not about how much knowledge one possesses, but about the intimate relationship between the believer and God. Those who truly love God are known by him, and this relationship is of utmost importance.

Verse 4: Paul addresses the specific issue of eating food that has been sacrificed to idols. He affirms the truth that idols have no real existence or power in the world. There is only one true God, and believers have the knowledge that idols are powerless and insignificant.

Verse 5: Paul acknowledges that there may be various beliefs and practices regarding gods and lords, both in heaven and on earth. However, he emphasizes that these so-called gods have no true authority or power compared to the one true God.

Verse 6: Paul reaffirms the central truth of the Christian faith. For believers, there is only one God, the Father, who is the source of all things and the one for whom they live. Additionally, there is only one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things were created and through whom believers have their life and existence.
