1 Peter 1:1-2
1 “Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,
To those who reside as strangers, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, who are chosen2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.”
Verse 1: Peter, as an apostle of Jesus Christ, is writing this letter to the believers who are referred to as God’s elect. The term “elect” here does not imply a selective few, but rather refers to all believers who have been chosen by God according to His foreknowledge These believers are described as exiles, indicating that their true citizenship is in heaven, and they are scattered throughout different regions.
Verse 2: The believers’ election is based on the foreknowledge of God the Father. It is not a matter of individual selection, but rather God’s predetermined plan for salvation. The sanctifying work of the Spirit is what sets believers apart and makes them holy. It is through the Spirit’s work that they are enabled to live in obedience to Jesus Christ.
The phrase “sprinkled with his blood” refers to the cleansing and forgiveness of sins that believers have received through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. His blood has made them clean and brought them into a right relationship with God. Peter concludes by extending his greeting of grace and peace to the believers, emphasizing that these blessings are available to them in abundance.
