1 Timothy 3:8-13
8 “Deacons likewise must be men of dignity, not insincere, not prone to drink much wine, not greedy for money, 9 but holding to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. 10 These men must also first be tested; then have them serve as deacons if they are beyond reproach.11 Women must likewise be dignified, not malicious gossips, but temperate, faithful in all things. 12 Deacons must be husbands of one wife, and good managers of their children and their own households.13 For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a high standing and great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.”
Verse 8: Deacons hold a place of physical servitude in the church. Paul addresses the qualifications for deacons. Deacons are to be respected and sincere in their character. They should not be excessive in their consumption of wine, as this can lead to unwise behavior. Additionally, they should not be motivated by dishonest gain or personal profit. Essentially, Paul wants deacons to know who they are in Christ and live from this new nature.
Verse 9: Deacons are called to hold firmly to the deep truths of the faith. This means they should have a clear understanding of the gospel and a strong foundation in their faith. It is important for them to have a clear conscience, knowing that they are living in alignment with the truth of the gospel. Paul is speaking of the mystery of Christ’s incarnation and salvation for humanity. All who have trust in this mystery have a clear conscience because they have been cleansed from sin. This cleansing is from the blood of Christ alone and not good works.
Verse 10: Before serving as deacons, individuals should be known by the church community. Paul is not speaking of an exam so much as time given to know the character of the individuals desiring to be deacons. This allows their character and faithfulness to be evaluated. If there are no significant concerns or issues, they can then be entrusted with the role of a deacon.
Verse 11: The Greek word can mean women or wives. However, in Romans 16:1 a woman named Phoebe serves as a deaconess. So, women were apparently deacons during the days of the early church. As male deacons ought to be mature Christians, so also should female deacons.
Verse 12: Similar to the qualifications for overseers, deacons are to be faithful in their marriages and demonstrate the ability to manage their families well. This highlights the importance of leadership within the home as a reflection of their ability to serve in the church.
Verse 13: Deacons ought to be people who are already active in the church. These people demonstrate their love for the body of Christ and attain strong relationships with those in the local body. The local body will, in turn, trust their leadership. This is not speaking of high standing as an identity or of individuals who earn more rewards in heaven.
