Romans 8:26-39

26 In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; 27 and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. 29 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; 30 and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.

31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? 33 Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies; 34 who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us. 35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 Just as it is written,

“FOR YOUR SAKE WE ARE BEING PUT TO DEATH ALL DAY LONG;
WE WERE CONSIDERED AS SHEEP TO BE SLAUGHTERED.”

37 But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Verses 26-27: These verses highlight the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives, especially in prayer. The Spirit helps us in our weakness and intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. This means that even when we don’t know what to pray for, the Spirit is actively working on our behalf, aligning our prayers with God’s will (Romans 8:26-27). This is a comforting reminder that we are never alone in our spiritual journey; the Spirit is always present, guiding and supporting us.

Verse 28: This well-loved verse assures us that God works all things together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. It doesn’t mean that everything that happens is good, but that God can bring good out of any situation. This promise is a source of hope and trust, encouraging us to rely on God’s sovereignty and goodness in every circumstance (Romans 8:28).

Verses 29-30: Here, Paul speaks about God’s foreknowledge and predestination. These verses emphasize that God has a plan for each believer, conforming us to the image of His Son. This process includes being called, justified, and glorified. It’s a reminder of the security and purpose we have in Christ, knowing that our salvation is part of God’s eternal plan (Romans 8:29-30).

Verse 31-32: Paul asks, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” This rhetorical question underscores the assurance we have in God’s unwavering support. He who did not spare His own Son will graciously give us all things. This highlights the depth of God’s love and commitment to us, reinforcing our confidence in His provision and protection (Romans 8:31-32).

Verses 33-34: These verses address the issue of condemnation. Paul assures us that no one can bring a charge against God’s elect because it is God who justifies. Christ Jesus, who died and was raised, is at the right hand of God interceding for us. This means that our standing before God is secure, and we are free from any accusation because of Christ’s finished work (Romans 8:33-34).

Verses 35-37: Paul lists various trials and hardships, asking if any of these can separate us from the love of Christ. The answer is a resounding no. In all these things, we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. This passage assures us of the unbreakable bond we have with Christ, no matter the circumstances (Romans 8:35-37).

Verses 36: Paul quotes Psalm 44:22, “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” This verse acknowledges the reality of suffering and persecution in the Christian life. However, it serves to highlight the contrast with the victory and security we have in Christ, as emphasized in the surrounding verses.

Verses 38-39: Paul concludes with a powerful declaration that nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Neither death nor life, angels nor demons, present nor future, nor any powers, height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation can sever this bond. This is the ultimate assurance of God’s eternal love and our secure position in Him (Romans 8:38-39).

These verses collectively offer profound encouragement, reminding us of the Spirit’s help, God’s sovereign plan, our secure standing in Christ, and the unbreakable love of God. They invite us to live with confidence and hope, knowing that we are deeply loved and eternally secure in Him.
