Ephesians 5:1-5

1 “Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; 2 and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.” 3 But sexual immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be mentioned among you, as is proper among saints; 4 and there must be no filthiness or foolish talk, or vulgar joking, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. 5 For this you know with certainty, that no sexually immoral or impure or greedy person, which amounts to an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.”

Verse 1: Paul is encouraging believers to imitate God in their behavior. We are called to reflect the character and nature of our Heavenly Father. As beloved children, we have a new identity in Christ, and this empowers us to live in a way that honors God.

Verse 2: Paul emphasizes the importance of walking in love, just as Christ loved us and sacrificed himself for us. Our motivation for loving others should come from the love we have received from Christ. This love is not based on our own efforts, but on the finished work of Christ on the cross.

Verse 3: Paul reminds believers that sexual immorality, impurity, and covetousness have no place in the lives of those who are set apart as saints. We are called to live in a way that is consistent with our new identity in Christ. We are no longer compatible with sin.

Verse 4: Paul encourages believers to avoid engaging in unwholesome speech. Instead, we are to cultivate an attitude of thanksgiving. Our words should reflect the gratitude we have for what Christ has done for us.

Verse 5: Paul reminds believers that those who persist in a lifestyle of sexual immorality, impurity, and covetousness are not partakers of the kingdom of God. This is not a statement about losing salvation, but rather a reminder that those who continue in such behaviors are not living in alignment with their true identity in Christ.
