Hebrews 1:13-14
13 But to which of the angels has He ever said,
‘Sit at My right hand,
Until I make Your enemies
A footstool for Your feet’?
14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out to provide service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?”
Verse 13: The author of Hebrews poses a rhetorical question to highlight the superiority of the Son over the angels. God never directed any angel to sit at His right hand until His enemies were made a footstool. This statement emphasizes the exalted position and authority of the Son. This also confirms the completeness of Christ’s finished work. Because his salvific work is so perfect, he sat down. High priests under the Old Covenant never sat down because their work was never finished.
Verse 14: The author affirms the role of angels as ministering spirits. They are sent by God to serve and assist those who will inherit salvation. To be sure, angels exist and apparently angels serve believers. However, their message to the world in the Old Covenant, the law, is inferior to the New Covenant of Christ.
