Hebrews 1:8-12

8 But regarding the Son He says,

‘Your throne, God, is forever and ever,
And the scepter of righteousness is the scepter of His kingdom.
9 You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness;
Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You
With the oil of joy above Your companions.’

10 And,

‘You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth,
And the heavens are the works of Your hands;
11 They will perish, but You remain;
And they all will wear out like a garment,
12 And like a robe You will roll them up;
Like a garment they will also be changed.
But You are the same,
And Your years will not come to an end.’

Verse 8: Here, the author is quoting from Psalm 45:6-7, where God addresses the Son as “O God.” This declaration affirms the Son’s divine nature and eternal reign. The scepter of justice symbolizes His righteous rule over His kingdom. Jesus, the Son, is far and above all other beings in authority. He is the king and therefore his message is supreme over any and all messages from the Old Testament.

Verse 9: This verse continues the quotation from Psalm 45:7. It highlights the Son’s perfect moral character, as He loves righteousness and hates wickedness. Because of His righteousness, God, the Father, has exalted him above His companions and anointed him with the oil of joy, signifying His divine appointment and the joy that comes from fulfilling His role as the Messiah. His finished work is therefore totally and completely sufficient for the world.

Verse 10: The author quotes from Psalm 102:25-27. It emphasizes the Son’s role in creation, affirming that He, as the Lord, laid the foundations of the earth and crafted the heavens. The message of Jesus, therefore, is the message not of a servant of God but of God himself.

Verse 11: This verse continues the quotation from Psalm 102:25-27. It acknowledges the temporary nature of the created world, which will eventually perish and wear out like a garment. In contrast, the Son remains unchanged and eternal. Therefore, his message reigns supreme.

Verse 12: The final verse of this passage concludes the quotation from Psalm 102:25-27. It depicts the Son rolling up the created world like a robe and changing it. Despite these changes, the Son remains constant and eternal. His years will never end, highlighting His timeless existence and the timelessness of his salvation.
