Hebrews 12:1-2
1 “Therefore, since we also have such a great cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let’s rid ourselves of every obstacle and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let’s run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking only at Jesus, the originator and perfecter of the faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Verse 1: The author begins by reminding us that we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses. These witnesses are the faithful believers who have gone before us, who have lived out their faith and endured trials..The author then urges us to throw off everything that hinders us and the sin that easily entangles us. In the content the sin that entangles is unbelief. Here, again, the author is wanting to make sure that his audience is truly saved.
Verse 2: Having thrown off the hindrances and sin, the author encourages us to run with perseverance the race that is marked out for us. This race refers to our journey of faith, our walk with Christ. It is not a sprint, but a lifelong journey that requires endurance and steadfastness. To run this race well, we are to fix our eyes on Jesus. He is the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. Jesus has gone before us and has completed the work of salvation on our behalf. We can trust in His finished work and rely on His grace. By fixing our eyes on Jesus, we keep our focus on him and His faithfulness, rather than being distracted by the challenges and temptations of this world.
Verse 2 continues: The author reminds us of the incredible sacrifice that Jesus made for us. He endured the cross, despising its shame, because of the joy set before him. This joy refers to the redemption and reconciliation of humanity. Jesus willingly suffered and died so that we could be brought into a right relationship with God.
After His resurrection, Jesus ascended to the right hand of the throne of God, signifying His victory and authority. He now reigns in glory and intercedes for us. This reminds us that we have a Savior who has overcome sin and death, and who is seated in a position of power and authority.
