Romans 1:28-32
28 “And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a depraved mind, to do those things that are not proper, 29 people having been filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, and evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice; they are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 without understanding, untrustworthy, unfeeling, and unmerciful; 32 and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also approve of those who practice them.
Verse 28: Paul continues to describe the consequences of humanity’s rejection of God and their refusal to acknowledge His truth. Because people did not value or retain the knowledge of God, God allowed them to have a depraved mind. This means that their thinking became distorted and corrupted, leading them to engage in actions that are contrary to God’s design and will.
Verse 29-31: Paul provides a list of various sinful behaviors and attitudes that result from the depraved mind. He highlights the wide range of wickedness and evil that people can engage in when they turn away from God. This list includes actions such as greed, envy, murder, deceit, gossip, slander, arrogance, and disobedience. Paul’s intention is to paint a picture of the brokenness and corruption that can occur when people reject God’s truth and follow their own desires.
Verse 32: Paul points out that despite having knowledge of God’s righteous decree and the consequences of sinful actions, people not only continue to engage in these behaviors but also approve of others who do the same. This highlights the depth of humanity’s rebellion against God and their willingness to embrace and promote sinful practices.
