Romans 15:1-4
1 “Now we who are strong ought to bear the weaknesses of those without strength, and not just please ourselves. 2 Each of us is to please his neighbor for his good, to his edification. 3 For even Christ did not please Himself, but as it is written: “The taunts of those who taunt You have fallen on Me.”4 For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.”
Verse 1: Paul encourages those who are strong in their faith to patiently bear with the weaknesses of their fellow believers. Instead of seeking to please ourselves or asserting our own rights, we should extend grace and understanding to those who may struggle in certain areas. This reflects the selfless love and humility that Christ demonstrated towards us.
Verse 2: Paul emphasizes the importance of considering the well-being and growth of our neighbors, both within and outside the body of Christ. Our actions and attitudes should be aimed at building others up and promoting their spiritual welfare. This involves putting their needs above our own and seeking to be a source of encouragement and support.
Verse 3: Paul points to the example of Christ, who willingly endured insults and mistreatment for the sake of others. Jesus did not seek to please himself but instead took on the burdens and sufferings of humanity. This serves as a reminder for us to follow in His footsteps, demonstrating sacrificial love and compassion towards others.
Verse 4: Paul highlights the significance of the Scriptures in teaching and guiding us. The Old Testament writings were given to instruct and encourage us, ultimately leading us to hope. As we study and meditate on the Scriptures, we gain endurance and find encouragement in the promises and truths they contain. The Word of God serves as a source of hope and guidance for our lives.
