Romans 8:1-4
1 “Therefore there is now no condemnation at all for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. 3 For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”
Verse 1: This verse is a powerful declaration of the freedom and security that believers have in Christ. As followers of Jesus, we are no longer under condemnation because of our union with him. The finished work of Christ on the cross has completely dealt with our sin and guilt. We can rest assured that we are fully forgiven and accepted by God.
Verse 2: Paul contrasts two laws: the law of the Spirit and the law of sin and death. Through our identification with Christ, we have been set free from the law of sin and death. The Holy Spirit, who gives life, now dwells within us, empowering us to live in victory over sin. We are no longer bound by the demands and condemnation of the law, but instead, we live by the Spirit’s guidance and leading.
Verse 3: The law, though good and holy, was unable to save us or free us from the power of sin. It was weakened by our sinful flesh. However, God, in His great love and mercy, sent His Son Jesus in human form to be the perfect sacrifice for our sins. Jesus took upon himself the condemnation that sin deserved, and through His death and resurrection, sin was condemned and defeated.
Verse 4: Through our union with Christ, the righteous requirement of the law has been fully met in us. It is not our own efforts or works that fulfill the law, but rather the work of Christ on our behalf. As believers, we now live according to the Spirit, allowing His guidance and power to shape our lives. We are no longer under the dominion of the flesh but are empowered to live in alignment with God’s will.
