Titus 2:6-10
6 “Likewise urge the young men to be sensible; 7 in all things show yourself to be an example of good deeds, with purity in doctrine, dignified, 8 sound in speech which is beyond reproach, so that the opponent will be put to shame, having nothing bad to say about us.9 Urge slaves to be subject to their own masters in everything, to be pleasing, not argumentative, 10 not stealing, but showing all good faith so that they will adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in every respect.”
Verse 6: Paul instructs Titus to encourage young men to exercise self-control. This self-control is a fruit of the Spirit and is made possible through the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers. It is also a reflection of the transformed nature of those who are in Christ.
Verse 7: Paul urges Titus to set an example for others, both in his actions and in his teaching. Believers are called to live in a way that reflects the goodness and grace of God, demonstrating integrity and seriousness in their conduct and teaching.
Verse 8: Paul emphasizes the importance of using speech that is sound and cannot be criticized. Believers should speak in a way that reflects the truth of the gospel and the grace of God, so that those who oppose them may have no valid accusations against them. This is not about being defensive, but rather about living in a way that silences baseless criticism.
Verse 9: Paul addresses the issue of slaves and instructs them to be submissive to their masters and to seek to please them. Paul has in mind not slavery related to kidnapping but rather slavery that was more akin to employment or repaying debts. Believers are to live in a way that reflects the love and grace of Christ, even in difficult circumstances. It is about demonstrating a Christ-like attitude of humility and respect.
Verse 10: Paul encourages slaves not to steal from their masters, but rather to demonstrate trustworthiness. This this instruction is about living in a way that reflects the character of God and makes the teaching about God our Savior attractive to others. It is about being a witness to the transformative power of the gospel through one’s actions and conduct.
