Hebrews 13:1-6

Let love of the brothers and sisters continue. Do not neglect hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it. Remember the prisoners, as though in prison with them, and those who are badly treated, since you yourselves also are in the body.Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled; for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers. Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever abandon you,” so that we confidently say,

‘The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid.
What will man do to me?’”

Let love of the brothers…entertained angels without knowing it: Love is to be the characterizing trait of Christians. Every little thing we do is important if love is present. What matters most is expressing Christ’s love. The author even suggests that we could be kind to neighbors or someone in a store and be expressing love to an angel without knowing it. Every moment matters for the Christian. Everything we do can be walking after the Spirit except for sin. This is what God honors.

Remember the prisoners: The author wants Christians to know that He cares for prisoners. Christians, therefore, care for prisoners with Him. The body of Christ as a whole can look to helping prisoners as well as other neglected people in society. This is not a lone ranger event but rather a group effort. It’s also important to remember that these prisoners are not all such because of moral crimes. Some were in prison for their faith.

Judge the sexually immoral: The author of Hebrews has waited until the end of the book to address behavior. This is so that the right foundation for behavior, the New Covenant, could be established. The author is now talking about an impending judgment, not for Christians as they have been perfectly cleansed, but for unbelievers.

I will never desert you: The author wants Christians to be content with what they have. And what they have is Christ. Money is not evil or bad, but it will eventually forsake you and desert you. But God will not. God’s presence is the only constant in life.
