Romans 1:8-9

8 “First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, because your faith is being proclaimed throughout the world. For God, whom I serve in my spirit in the preaching of the gospel of His Son, is my witness as to how unceasingly I make mention of you,”

Paul wanted the church in Rome to know the depth of his love for them. He constantly talked about the church because of its great work for the Gospel. Interestingly, Paul’s words about Rome were the result of his serving God in the spirit as he advanced the Gospel. Paul’s love and passion for the church in Rome was from the core of his being. We may be tempted to equate serving God in the Spirit with being a traveling preacher like Paul, but Paul is not making any statements about this. Serving in the spirit is a 24/7 reality for the believer! We are always one with God in our spirit. We may not serve in the spirit like Paul, but God is living through us within our own contexts and personalities.
