Romans 15:1-4

1 “Now we who are strong ought to bear the weaknesses of those without strength, and not just please ourselves. Each of us is to please his neighbor for his good, to his edification. For even Christ did not please Himself, but as it is written: “The taunts of those who taunt You have fallen on Me.”For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.”

We who are strong: People who have weak faith need the support of those who are strong in the Lord. Even if people do not understand that life in Christ is not about food and drink, strong Christians are still to take a loving stance with them (Romans 14:17). Jesus said something similar to Paul in this regard: It’s not about what goes into us, but what comes out of us (Matthew 15:11). Strong Christians understand this idea but can choose to love those who do not. Otherwise, relationships will be hurt.

For even Christ: Christ lived a life focused on God’s will despite opposition. He ultimately took their insults and opposition on Himself at the cross. Jesus Christ took our punishment in full.

Everything that was written: Paul wants the church in Rome to know that all Scripture is for Christians. However, Scripture must be understood in context. This would have special application for the Jews as they had the Old Covenant law. The law pointed out the reality of sin. This was its purpose. It was never meant to be an actual path to righteousness. Jesus is the Christian’s righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21).
