2 Peter 2:4-10

4 “For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, held for judgment;and did not spare the ancient world, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; and if He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction by reducing them to ashes, having made them an example of what is coming for the ungodly;and if He rescued righteous Lot, who was oppressed by the perverted conduct of unscrupulous people (for by what he saw and heard that righteous man, while living among them, felt his righteous soul tormented day after day by their lawless deeds), then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from a trial, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment, 10 and especially those who indulge the flesh in its corrupt passion, and despise authority.”

Brought a flood: The flood was a very real historical event according to Peter. The story of Noah and the flood is used here to illustrate the coming divine judgement upon unbelievers. But Noah, who was righteous, was spared. This is significant because Peter argues for the Christian’s safety in Christ throughout his letter. Christians all possess righteousness through faith in Jesus. Therefore, we have no reason to fear judgment.

Tormented day after day: Peter is speaking of spiritual DNA. When God saves a person, they are righteous to the core. This new righteous nature grates against the ways of the world.

Godly from a trial: Peter is speaking of godliness as a nature, not as a spiritual track record. When we believe in Jesus, we are made godly to the core of our beings.
