1 Corinthians 2:10-16

“For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. 11 For who among people knows the thoughts of a person except the spirit of the person that is in him? So also the thoughts of God no one knows, except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God. 13 We also speak these things, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words.14 But a natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15 But the one who is spiritual discerns all things, yet he himself is discerned by no one. 16 For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he will instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ.”

The Spirit of God: The Holy Spirit is a person, the third member of the triune God. The Spirit is always in agreement with the finished work of Christ. This means that He relates to the believer according to the work of Christ. He is not convicting the believer of sins taken away by Jesus. Rather, He, the Spirit of truth, is convicting the world of sin while convicting the believer of righteousness found in the New Covenant (see John 16:8; Hebrews 10:15-17). So, while the Spirit cares about our attitudes and actions and counsels us to live according to His fruit, He is never relating to us independently of Christ’s accomplishments.

So that we may know: We have received the Spirit so that we may learn and understand the salvation given freely to us by God. This is what the Spirit is doing within us.

But a natural man: Paul is distinguishing between the natural man, or those associated with the world system, and the spiritual man associated with Christ. According to the world, the cross is foolish. But according to the spiritual person it is everything. All who have believed in Christ can truly appraise all things and assess their worth. However, those who are of the world cannot truly examine life because they lack true perspective.

We have the mind of Christ: Believers have Christ’s very mind. The Spirit dwells within us and offers us His thoughts and desires.
