1 Corinthians 2:6-9

“Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away; but we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God predestined before the ages to our glory; the wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for if they had understood it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory; but just as it is written:

“Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard,
And which have not entered the human heart,
All that God has prepared for those who love Him.”

God’s wisdom in a mystery: God’s wisdom was ultimately the person of Jesus. Paul was not, therefore, merely speaking facts about God: He was speaking about Jesus. Jesus was Paul’s message from start to finish. True wisdom is the person of Jesus, not an idea or philosophical concept. God predestined that Christ would be wisdom and salvation to the entire world, Jew and Gentile alike.

To our glory: As much as the Gospel is all about the person of Jesus, Paul now speaks of the believer’s glory or nature. Jesus has given us His glory as a free gift. Therefore, we now share in the very nature of God (see 2 Peter 1:3-4).

Things which eye has not seen: The message of Jesus was not within Israel’s expectations of the Messiah. They expected a military leader who would set them free from the rule of Rome. But Jesus went to the cross for the salvation of the world. This is a truly mysterious Messiah but the one and only Messiah, nevertheless. Jesus reveals God to be better than we could ever imagine.

Love Him: In the New Testament loving God is always associated with believing in His Son (see also 1 John 3:23). Paul’s point is that we love God by believing in Jesus, and in turn, we step into God’s magnificent promises which are far beyond what we could possibly imagine.
