CHAPTERS

1 Timothy 5:23-24

23 “Do not go on drinking only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.24 The sins of some people are quite evident, going before them to judgment; for others, their sins follow after. 25 Likewise also, deeds that are good are quite evident, and those which are otherwise cannot be concealed.”

Do not go on drinking only water: Paul encouraged Timothy to drink wine due to some stomach condition with which he struggled. Notice that Paul does not encourage Timothy to pray harder to claim healing in faith. Instead, he encourages Timothy to take red wine as medicine. This indicates that Paul did not believe physical healing to be guaranteed by the Gospel.

The sins: God is the only one who can judge who is a genuine Christian deceived by bad doctrine and who is inherently a fallen person. Paul’s point regardless of the spiritual nature of the person is that Timothy ought to consider their deeds and be wise in how he treats them.
