Hebrews 5:5-6

“So too Christ did not glorify Himself in becoming a High Priest, but it was He who said to Him,

“You are My Son,
Today I have fathered You’;

just as He also says in another passage,

‘You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek.’”

You are My Son…Melchizedek: Jesus is the only priest who was God’s Son. Jesus, therefore, is a priest by divine appointment from outside of the law. This is precisely why the author of Hebrews compares Jesus to Melchizedek. The priesthood of Melchizedek is an illegal priesthood according to the law. In the law, only those of the tribe of Levi could serve as High Priest. Jesus, however, is of the tribe of Judah. God wants us to know that when there is a change of priesthood there is also a change of law. Because the priesthood has changed, there is now a New Covenant that is superior to the Old Covenant. Therefore, there is no comparison between law and grace. We cannot mix Jesus with the old way of the law.
