1 Timothy 3:8-13

“Deacons likewise must be men of dignity, not insincere, not prone to drink much wine, not greedy for money, but holding to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. 10 These men must also first be tested; then have them serve as deacons if they are beyond reproach.11 Women must likewise be dignified, not malicious gossips, but temperate, faithful in all things. 12 Deacons must be husbands of one wife, and good managers of their children and their own households.13 For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a high standing and great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.”

Deacons: Paul likely has in mind those in the church who hold a special place of physical servitude in the church. Deacons tend to participate in manual labor and service projects while elders are more focused on teaching and discipling.

Mystery of the faith: This is not Paul speaking of secret knowledge. Instead, Paul is speaking of the mystery of Christ’s incarnation and salvation for humanity. All who have trust in this mystery have a clear conscience because they have been cleansed from sin. This cleansing is from the blood of Christ alone and not good works.

Women: The Greek word can mean women or wives. However, in Romans 16:1 a woman named Phoebe serves as a deaconess. So, women were apparently deacons during the days of the early church. As male deacons ought to be mature Christians, so also should female deacons.

High standing: Deacons ought to be people who are already active in the church. These people demonstrate their love for the body of Christ and attain strong relationships with those in the local body. The local body will, in turn, trust their leadership. This is not speaking of high standing as an identity or of individuals who earn more rewards in heaven.
