Romans 5:20-21

20 “The law came in so that the offense would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, so also grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Paul associates the law with sin and death and God’s grace with righteousness and eternal life. The law caused our sin problem to be exacerbated. However, God’s grace in Christ increased abundantly, covering all sins. This was so that we would experience a different type of reign, a reign of grace, in which we are free from the law and given eternal life.
