Romans 5:6-8

6  “For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will hardly die for a righteous person; though perhaps for the good person someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

While we were still in Romans 1 mode, with the wrath of God being revealed against us, God died for us. We often feel as though God doesn’t love us, or that He’s absent in the midst of trials. But Paul is saying that God’s love for us is not a feeling we experience: It is a historical fact. God proved His love by dying on the cross. Christ died when we had nothing to offer God but our own sins.
